Interested in Volunteering?
If you have some time to spare, the Waubonsee Community College Adult Literacy Volunteer Project could use your talents. One in five adults in Illinois lacks the skills needed to access or enjoy reading materials. Two million adults are not only disconnected from learning, they are unable to participate fully in the workplace, in their children's education and in society. In the area served by Waubonsee College, an estimated 23,000 immigrants live in households where English is not the primary language.
Volunteers are needed for reading, English as a Second Language and Computer Literacy. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Kathy Turnowchyk, Coordinator of Volunteer Tutors, or Sherry Woodward, Adult Literacy Manager, at 630-801-7900 ext. 4107. They will get you a packet of information and answer any questions you may have.

Answers to Questions Asked
" If I fail the certification test on the first try, what happens next? '
ANSWER: You will have 30 days to re-take the test. You will be emailed a new voucher number and expiration date to use.
" How do I let employers know I have certification?'
ANSWER: You would list on your resume "Microsoft certified in (example) Excel,2007", (and possibly the certificate number and date)and make sure that you have your certifications available when you are called for an interview. If you do NOT take the certification test, you can still list on your resume that you are "Current in Microsoft (example) Excel, 2007" but be sure that you do not say you are 'certified in Microsoft'. Many employers will find that to be enough. And remember, when you finish each Microsoft course, you will be able to print a 'Completion Certificate' which you can also use to prove you have finished the training course.
"What can Waubonsee do to help me?
ANSWER: WCC has a Presidential Inititive called 'Brighter Futures' which offers a variety of useful programs and even scholarships. I list as many of these events as I can on this blog. There is a very easy to apply for scholarship sponsored by the WCC Foundation for those of you who are unemployed. The scholarship offers $500 towards a Workforce Development course. To obtain an application form, go to: http://www.waubonsee.edu/brighterfutures
For information on courses available in Workforce Development, visit:
http://www.waubonsee.edu/workforcedev
Also, Waubonsee Community Education and Career Services both offer assistance. Check them out on the waubonsee.edu website. I'll list special services, such as the new Career Club, in the left hand column of this blog, under 'WCC Career Services Sites'. Just find the title you are looking for and click to take you directly to that site. WCC is a community college, and when the community needs assistance, we will do what we can to assist.

No Business or Technical Professional vouchers are available
Following is the information I was given regarding the vouchers that were re-assigned:
All Elevate America vouchers have been assigned to customers or assigned to the pre-activated course sets. On Tuesday, Oct. 27th, 2009 vouchers that were assigned to a customer prior to Oct. 15th and not activated by Oct. 23rd were transferred to holding accounts and pre-activated to ensure the vouchers were not lost after Oct. 31st. Customers affected by this process were sent emails on the 27th. These vouchers were not taken away; they are being preserved for the original assignees. Upon request, the vouchers will be returned to the original account and the customer will receive information on the credentials (Microsoft Live Id userid and password) required to access the Microsoft E-Learning site.
Send an email IMMEDIATELY to:
EAOffice2007@illinoisworknet.com
and request that your vouchers be reinstated, listing the vouchers you were originally assigned. You should then get a return email with the process by the end of this week. However, if your illinoisworknet account status shows 'not activated' and you know that you have activated your vouchers, go to the Microsoft e-learning site and check. Many of those vouchers are indeed there, despite the 'not activated' status on the IWN site. And always enter your classes from the IWN portal to avoid incurring costs from Microsoft. You will have access to your registered course for ONE YEAR from the date they were registered.
Contact me at 630-906-4128 if you are still experiencing problems accessing your courses.

Vouchers listed as 'Not Activated' on IWN site
Several of you came to my office concerned about the fact that on the Illinois Worknet (IWN) site, some or all of your vouchers are listed as 'Not Activated'.
When we checked the Microsoft e-learning page, these vouchers were indeed activated, and courses were available.
IWN tried to find out which of the vouchers were not activated, and these were 'pre-activated' by the state. However, they are listed as 'Not Activated'. Please check the Microsoft e-learning site to see if your courses are listed. If they are, then you have access to them for 1 year.
Call me or see me if you do NOT find them on your e-learning account.

VOUCHER ACTIVATION - IMPORTANT UPDATE
If you did not yet activate your vouchers, you may find them 'missing' and have received an email stating:
"Thank you for your interest in receiving computer training through the Elevate America Program. Our records indicate you have not yet activated your training vouchers. In an effort to ensure that vouchers are not lost by not being activated by October 31, 2009, the State of Illinois will be pre-activating training vouchers this week. It may appear that the vouchers have been removed from your Illinois workNet account; however, please be assured that the Elevate America team is committed to providing you with the training courses that you need. If you still wish to take the training, and we hope you do, please respond to this e-mail by November 13, 2009 and provide us with information regarding the courses that you would like to take (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access). Please also indicate if you need assistance in accessing the training courses or have any other questions."
Quite a few of you have called me asking what exactly the email means. I called the director of the program, and he assured me that you will still be able to access these Office courses, with vouchers. However, you need to send an email IMMEDIATELY to:
EAOffice2007@illinoisworknet.com
if you are interested in a training "course set" including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until November 13, 2009, or until all vouchers are used.
What this means is that you will have access to Business Worker voucher courses, but you may have to wait a couple of weeks to start. This does not apply to vouchers that have previously been activated. Those e-learning courses are there for you now, and you do have them for a year from the date you originally activated them. Please call me if there is any confusion, or if you need assistance with accessing the e-learning site.

Problems with Outlook 2007 Tests
I've had calls from voucher recipients regarding problems with completing the Outlook 2007 test (Outlook only).
The test would not come up at WCC, or at Elgin CC. Both sites are working to resolve the problem, but please check with the sites before going out to test on Outlook 2007. It may be resolved by the time this is posted, but I don't want anyone traveling needlessly.

Hotmail and Windows Live Accounts Hacked
You may have heard or read about the following news that Hotmail accounts have been hacked. This should NOT affect any of you using Hotmail or Windows Live to access your vouchers, but I would caution you about using those accounts for anything else. You can sign up for a free Gmail account from Google, or a free Yahoo account. Neither of those accounts have been compromised.
Judith
From BBC News, Monday, October 5. 2009:
Hotmail accounts 'posted online'
Reports suggest Windows Live Hotmail accounts have been hacked
Thousands of Hotmail passwords have been hacked and posted online, according to reports.
Microsoft, which owns the popular web-based e-mail system, told BBC News that it was aware of the claims and that it was "investigating the situation".
A report on technology blog neowin.net said that the details of "over 10,000" accounts had been posted to a website.
The blog suggested the accounts had been hacked or had been collected as part of a phishing scheme.
Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing personal details such as bank accounts or login names and passwords.

Job Assistance: Plano/Yorkville/Sandwich area
Millions of Americans remain unemployed or underemployed. The country's jobless rate ticked up to 9.7 percent in August. If laid-off workers who have given up looking for jobs or who have settled for part-time work are included, the August unemployment rate comes in at 16.8 percent.
As of July, the unemployment rate in Kane County was 11.1%
Even as the economy improves we are likely to see continued high levels of unemployment and instability. Clearly, it remains difficult for America's unemployed or underemployed to find new or better jobs. Many of our district residents are still having trouble paying bills, in danger of losing their home, or are just confused and uncertain about the future.
Waubonsee Community College's Brighter Futures initiative is designed help district residents navigate today's economy. Brighter Futures begin on Wednesday, October 28 with a free event featuring one-on-one resume assistance and information sessions on a variety of topics including the job search, career decision making and personal financial survival. Held at Timber Creek in Sandwich, this event will be especially convenient for those who live in Yorkville, Plano, Sandwich and points west. Please help get the word out!

New Class: Absolutely Basic Computer
Sometimes basic is just not basic enough. We are developing a new class called Absolutely Basic, for those who have never so much as turned a computer on, or who have a fear that anything they do on the computer will be wrong.
The first class will be Friday, October 2 from 10 - 2. Participants will learn the proper way to start and close the computer, use applications, try out the web, and explore things such as Email, Facebook, shopping online, use Web MD and explore travel reservation sites.
This class IS for the faint of heart. If you know anyone who fits the description, have them call 630-906-4248. Registration is limited because of the hands-on aspect of the class. We'll be gentle...
Beyond Office
Do you know that we also offer classes other than Office programs? Check our schedule for classes like:
- Using Social Web sites in Business
- Digital Photography
- Quick Books Pro
- Beginning Publishing
- Web Resume
- Job Search
- 'Freeware' free software online
We also are looking for ideas for additional courses. Use the comments link below this post to add any thoughts you have, or call us at 630-906-4248 to register for any of the above classes.
46 More Days!
Don't forget that all vouchers you are assigned MUST be registered before October 31, 2009, or they will expire. Certification vouchers are not registered, but must be used by October 31. After that date, you can still take the certification testing, but you will need to pay for it.
All registered vouchers are good until one year from the date of registration. You can go back and review at any time during the year.

Getting Help
I've been fielding a lot of questions about registering your vouchers, getting into the Microsoft e-learning site, and navigating through the program. We can help you if you call us at 630-906-4248. My assistant Tyesha Rollins can usually get you into what you need, but I would highly suggest watching the e-learning video on how to navigate through the site BEFORE you begin your courses. We want you to be successful using these vouchers. This blog is for YOU. Please feel free to use comments to tell us of any success or problem. I monitor this page regularly.
Cheers!

Comment on EA Vouchers
I received the following comment from an EA student:
I began my training classes in Word. I found the program to be awkward and dificult to navigate. Though I knew the material in the "Starting Word" segment, I felt like I wasted my time trying to navigate rather than learning anything.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice?
Comments from others using EA vouchers? How long did it take you to be able to comfortably navigate through the courses? Any suggestions? Below are my suggestions to this student:
This is the program that Microsoft uses for all the courses it offers for certification. I can suggest that there is a free Office training program on the Illinois workNet site that may be easier to navigate. You might try that first, and then go back to the voucher courses when you have a larger base of knowledge to draw from. You can access those courses (also online, but without needing vouchers) at http://www.illinoisworknet.com/vos_portal/residents/en/Tools/
Go down to Elevate America, Getting Started with Microsoft Business Worker Courses, not Requiring a Voucher - Learn about the Getting Started Microsoft Business Workers online courses that do not require a voucher.
If that is still not what you need, the ACTC has classes in Word, levels 1 and 2. You can access a schedule from http://actcstudent.blogspot.com, and click on ACTC schedule in the left hand column.
If you would like to make a comment, click on the 'comments' button at the bottom of this post. A colleague suggested:
The navigation for the e-learning courses is not as intuitive as users may initially assume. Make sure to encourage the clients to go through the course overview section of each course prior to beginning the actual modules. The course overview provides videos and specific instructions for navigating through the online courses.
That is good advice, and relative to almost any online course that one takes. Good luck to all using the vouchers, and let me know how you are doing.

Office 2003 Vouchers
The Waubonsee Certiport Testing center is available for Office 2007 vouchers ONLY. We are researching the closest sites available for Office 2003 tests. So far it looks like Oswego East HS may give the 2003 tests, but I am waiting to hear back if that is indeed true, and, if so, will post their testing dates on this blog.
EA Tips and Techniques
Q: After I have activated my voucher, on some pages, it looks like I am being asked to pay for the courses I have selected, what does this mean? A: On a few pages in the Microsoft Learning system, you may see a dollar amount shown. This dollar amount indicates the total value of the collection of courses you are pursuing as part of your Microsoft Learning. While it may appear to be indicating payment is required, it is not. As long as you redeemed your voucher at the beginning of the process, you can ignore that item and proceed to your individual courses to begin your training.
Q: Is my Microsoft Windows Live ID member name an actual email address?A: No, your Windows Live ID member name is for logging into you Microsoft course only, it is NOT an actual email address. (sample Windows Live ID member name: computergenius@ea.illinoisworknet.com). Be sure to type in your real email address when creating your "My Illinois workNet" account.Q: I’m a returning user, where do I go to continue my learning? A: Click here for instructions and a link to return to courses you already entered or started. Q: I’m just getting started using computers, where do I begin? A: Click here for (New Computer User Level) Basic Computer Online CoursesQ: Do I need to own Microsoft Office 2007 software to use take the Microsoft Office 2007 online courses?A: No. Course participants do not need to purchase Office 2007 to take the Office 2007 courses. New Vouchers!!!
I received some additional vouchers for Business Worker and Certification Test. I assigned what I had to those who requested additional vouchers. I will still likely get more in September, so if you did not receive them now, contact me next month. I did not receive more IT Professional vouchers yet. If you would like to see if there are more vouchers available from an additional site, try elevateamerica@lumity.org. Tamara Springle or Lahesha Williams at that site may be able to assign those that Lumity has available. If I find out about any other sources of vouchers, I will let you know. I'm trying to get everyone what they requested, but the Business Professional vouchers are very limited. Please see the post on Testing Site Information for dates and times for testing at WCC.
